Marie L. (Derickson) Garnett

Marie L. Garnett, age 94, passed away at Woodland Country Manor on March 15, 2021. Marie was born in Hamilton, Ohio on January 25,1927 to Earl E. and Gertrude L. Derickson. She graduated from Ross High School in 1945 after twelve years of perfect attendance. Marie began her secretarial career at Ross School District Board Office before taking a position at Stewart High School in 1947, where she met her future husband. She was married to Carl R. Garnett on June 23, 1956. He preceded her in death in 2008. Marie touched many lives in the positions she held over the years at Talawanda School District. She was a long time member of Disciples Christian Church, Hamilton OH.

Her family and friends were very important to her. She was a good listener and cared genuinely about their daily lives. There were many cups of coffee and tea shared at her kitchen table and hours spent on the phone. She also loved to cook for her family; birthdays, holidays, and apple cider making, all were occasions for “Meme” to make her special dishes that are still a part of family meals to this day.

She is survived by her children, Don Garnett, Becki (Greg) Smith, and Cassie (Mike) McCartney; grandchildren Austin (Stephanie) Cousino, Allyson (Patrick) Cousino Smith, Anna Smith, Katy Smith, Lauren (Phil) Sebben, and Jonathon (Bryanna) McCartney; great-grandchildren Levi, Naomi, and Evelyn; in-laws Freda Garnett and Robert (Carolyn) Garnett; first cousins Melvin (Jean) Derickson and Charlotte (Bill) White; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings Robert E (Pearl),  Donald P (Vivian), and Clara M (Herbert) Schlichter.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 10:30am. at Ogle and Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 5086 College Corner Pike, Oxford OH. Funeral service will follow at 11:45am, officiated by Rev. Bonnie Goodwin and John Pendergest. Graveside services will be private.
