Gary George Kasten
Gary George Kasten, age 75, of Blanchester, Ohio passed away Saturday, August 28, 2021 in Wilmington, Ohio. He was born in Cincinnati, OH on July 12, 1946 to the late George and Jessie Kasten. Proceeded also in death by his brother, Ryan Kasten.
Survived by loving wife Karen Kasten; sons Michael and Adam (Michelle) Kasten and dear grandson Kole Kasten. Also survived by sister, Starr (Dick) Moore and sister-in-law Debbie Kasten.
He met his wife Karen on a blind date in Portsmouth, Ohio where both were teachers and married in 1979 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Gary was a proud veteran of The United States Marine Corps 1/9 (The Walking Dead) and served in Vietnam. He was a standout football player at Colerain, Quantico Marines, and Drake University. Gary was proud of his football days and he was awarded many 1st team awards for his skills as a defensive lineman. A highlight of his college days was playing in 2 bowl games. Gary received over 70 college offers to play college football and 16 offers to play in the NFL.
His passion was coaching his sons and others in sports. He coached varsity track and football in Blanchester, OH. He had a way to bring out the best in kids to motivate and help them in sports and in life where his bigger than life smile and booming laugh brought so many people together.
Gary enjoyed going to coin shows and loved all things Marines. He was recently awarded the Hometown Hero 2021 by the Colerain Chamber of Commerce. His book “395 Days” is about his experiences in Vietnam. Gary made friends with anyone he met and had a weekly friend group at Skyline Chili that brought him lots of joy. Gary was a “big man” with a “big heart” and will be missed by so many.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held Friday, September 3 @ 11:30 am with Pastor Kenneth Castor officiating at Crown Hill Memorial Park, 11825 Pippin Road, Cincinnati, OH 45231. No visitation will take place prior to the services. Family and friends may attend with social distancing in mind and masks are required.
