Dorothy Reed Orr, age 95, passed away November 20, 2021, wife of the late Lowell P. Orr, Jr. and Karl M. Reed, mother of David (Valerie) Reed, Ken (Lanette) Reed, Linda (Dr. James) Thomas, sister of Texanna Bick and the late Nancy Lackens; grandchildren, Tim (Jeanie) Reed, Amy (Tim) Kibbey, Ann (Josh) Zerkle, Nick (Sarah) Reis and Kristen Reis; great-grandchildren, Sam, Seth, Reed, Simon, Jonah, Jill, Leah, Levi and Haley. She was born March 19, 1926 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late David and Emily Peacock.
Dorothy was married to Karl Reed for 29 years and to Lowell Orr for 23 years. She always said that she was so fortunate to have such two good men for husbands. She graduated from Mariemont High School in 1944 and from the University of Cincinnati in 1948 with a degree in education. She taught fourth grade at Linwood School, and physical education at Eastern Hills and Mount Adams Elementary Schools.
Dorothy and Karl were married June 25, 1949. While Karl was stationed in Japan during the Korean conflict, she followed him there and they lived in Japan for several years. When they returned from Japan they started their family and built a house on Archland Drive that she always called her “new house” even after she had lived there for 40 years.
Dorothy enjoyed square dancing, golf, tennis, bowling and bridge with her many friends. After she and Lowell married in 1997 she enjoyed going to the Symphony, Pops, Reds’ games and many family events with Lowell. Every winter they enjoyed a few months in Boca Raton, Florida.
Lowell passed away in February, 2021 after which Dorothy’s health declined. When asked several years ago what she wanted to be remembered for, she said for being a good mother and a teacher. She also said for her work with Vacation Bible School and Church. Indeed she is remembered for her loving and gentle spirit that nurtured all those around her.
Funeral services will be held at Northern Hills Christian Church, 9470 Winton Rd, November 29 at 1 p.m. Visitation begins at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Northern Hills Christian Church or the Neediest Kids of All.
