Vera Jean Richardson Hatton, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the age of 96. She was born on September 20, 1922 in Hamilton, OH, the daughter of the late Evan David Richardson and Eva Wells Richardson. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Lella Richardson Wigal, Earl Richardson, Margaret Richardson Gadd, Freda Richardson Hornsby, Lyndon Richardson, Willard Richardson, Herman Richardson, Evan David Richardson, Jr., Ronald Richardson, and her twin, Victor Julian Richardson.
She married Theophilus Hatton, Jr. (Theo) of Smithfield, KY in 1943 and was married for 54 years until his death in 1997. She is survived by six adult children, Gary Theophilus Hatton (Mary) of Oxford, OH; Kathleen Hatton Heckerman (Steven) of North Port, FL; John Louis Hatton (Susan) of Louisville, KY; Mary Colleen Hatton Bradley (Howard) of Cedar Grove, IN; Josephine Hatton of West Carrollton, OH; and Elizabeth Jean Hatton Zuelke (Karl) of Fort Thomas, KY; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Hamilton High School in 1940, she was awarded a full academic scholarship to Miami University, where she majored in the classics. She worked in war industries before beginning her family. She moved to Oxford, OH in 1964. After raising her family, she worked as a lab assistant in the Home Economics Department at Miami University. She was a volunteer for over 30 years at the Oxford Senior Center, working as a dispatcher for the Help Van. She was active at the Victory Christian Church in Oxford for over 50 years.
Vera will be remembered for her love of family and her commitment to her church. She was a talented seamstress, a voracious reader, and an expert at crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She loved birds, cutting grass, and making delicious pies for others. She was well known for her quick wit and intelligence, and the encouragement she always readily offered to others.
A memorial service will take place December 1, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at the Knolls of Oxford (6727 Contreras Rd.) in the Commons Auditorium.
