H. Wayne Gibson

H. Wayne Gibson passed away on December 27, 2018 at the Woodland Country Manor, Somerville, Ohio. Wayne was born to Dallas and Mollye Hodge Gibson on May 23, 1922 in Gallipolis, Ohio. He was one of nine siblings. He was a 1940 graduate of Gallia Academy in Gallipolis and attended Morehead State Teachers College until called into active service in the United States Navy during World War II. After his military service, Wayne attended Miami University where he earned his degree in history in 1948 and played football for the then Miami “Redskins.” Wayne met Phyllis Marie Bender in Sidney, Ohio and they married on July 17, 1949, in Sidney. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Physical Education.His career at Miami spanned 62 years in various positions within the football program and administration and was inducted into the Miami University, Gallia County and Butler County Athletic Halls of Fame. He is known to all as “Gibby,” and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In addition to Phyllis, Gibby is survived by three sons, W. Scott (Pamela) of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; R.Todd (Cynthia) of Milford, OH: and Randall (Janice) of Brentwood, TN. He is also survived by five grandchildren, W. Scott Jr. (Elizabeth), Ryan, Caitlyn, Elizabeth, and Randall Jr. In addition, 23 nephews and nieces survive.  He is preceded in death by grandson Peyton Ryan Gibson and each of his siblings: Jewel Vanco, Evan Gibson, Beulah Mills, Donald Gibson, Ronald Gibson, Lorene Riffle, Archie Gibson (Nancy), and Betty Smith. Seven nephews and nieces also preceded him in death.The family wants to sincerely thank Dr. James Thomson and all the many staff members at Woodland Country Manor for the warmth, love and care Wayne received while being a member of their family for the past nine months. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2018 from 11AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 1PM at Oxford United Methodist Church, 14 Poplar St., Oxford, Ohio 45056. Interment to follow at Oxford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of their choice.
