Choy Chow Obituary

Choy Chow
Colerain Twp. – In the early hours of Saturday morning January 4th 2020, Choy Chow, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away at the age of 89. Born in the province of Assam, India on May 16, 1930 to Chinese and Indian parents she was one of eleven children. Her journey to America began in 1948 when she met her late husband Wing Fee Chow. They married on November 16, 1948 and established residence in Cincinnati, Ohio where she resided her entire life. She loved the city and America. On February 19, 1982 she became a naturalized citizen. She was proud to be an American. During her wonderful and glorious life she was a devoted wife, loving mother, friend to many, and smart businesswoman. Choy owned and operated a grocery store known as Fee’s Groceries in the Over-The-Rhine area of Cincinnati. A racially diverse and economically challenged neighborhood, Choy was a friend to everyone providing help and comfort to those in need regardless of color. She was affectionately known as Ms. Fee by her patrons. Her vibrant and outgoing personality was embraced by all who knew her. Never shy or hesitant to speak her mind, Choy’s”unfiltered” remarks were always refreshing and entertaining. Often blunt but never malicious. Her grandchildren in particular enjoyed many hilarious conversations with grandma. Her 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren provided much joy and comfort. She took great pride in the fact that all her grandchildren earned college degrees. She was a protective and caring mother, generous with her support providing much comfort when needed. Raising six children in a foreign country while her immediate family resided in China made her tough-minded and very pragmatic. During adverse and difficult times, she focused on the present looking forward to what life offered. Her passion in life was her family.

Choy is survived by her six children and their spouses: Ron and wife Mayme; Don and Polly; Nanci (Schmidt) and husband Steve; Ken and Beverly; Jenny (Huddleston) and Dick; Rick and Lynn. Thirteen grandchildren: Derek, April, Grant, Adam, Elizabeth, Becky, Nicholas, Tiffanie, Alisha, Lauren, Dustin, Courtney, and Spencer. Five great-grandchildren: Braden, Sibelle, Leyton, Jordyn, and Ethan. Preceded in death was her husband of 56 years, Wing Fee Chow and first born child Gerald who passed away as an infant and granddaughter Stephanie who passed in September 1996. Choy is also survived by many of her siblings and their families who reside in America and Asia including China and Hong Kong. Her extended family is far reaching and numerous.
